The Golden Gate Bridge is a magnet of tourists in the bay area and one of the most internationally recognized symbols of Northern California. The bridge was built in the late 1930’s. Nowadays, the bridge is open to the locals and tourists year round. However for more than 80 years, the Golden Gate Bridge has been a frequent site for commiting suicide. According to Sylvan Barner, “Since 1937, when San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge opened, some 1200 people have leaped from it to their deaths.” Bridge officials have debated many times on alternating the bridge in order to avoid suicides and save lives.
