Police brutality is a deadly weapon used against minorities.The very first cases of police brutality date as far back as the 1800’s and early 1900’s. In recent years, much debate has risen about whether or not policemen should be held accountable for their abusive actions. Physical assault among the police force and the public have become more persistent. While some audiences feel that excessive force is deemed necessary, more and more people are beginning to realize that police officers are abusing their powers and using excessive force among the public. Minorities, poor social class, and people who pose little threat. Overall these three things have one detail in common—they are the victims of police brutality. “A security video that was widely viewed online shows a white police officer, James Frascatore, running and tackling Blake, an African American, and slamming him to the ground” (Dudley). Frascatore has had a past history of excessive force complaints which tells you a lot about the police force. Instead of firing an officer who disregarded the rules, Frascatore was suspended. People who pose little threat are generally on the sidelines minding their own business and going about life normally. They are said to not look like they are carrying any weapons and aren’t looking guilty. So why is it that they are the first ones to be thrown on the ground. Why is it that they are the first ones to be arrested. A simple thing such as a bad attitude can lead to being thrown behind bars. “Almost half (48.8 percent) of the officers in the sample agreed or strongly agreed that a bad attitude would increase the likelihood of arrest” (Weisburd). An ignorant thing like this should not lead to arrest. Officers are supposed to be arresting criminals, bad guys, people who have wreaked havoc around the community not some random person who is having a bad day and decides to give you the side eye. The Police Foundation which is an non profit organization in Washington D.C. conducted a survey for the sole purpose of improving the police force in America. In this survey they asked policemen/women about their attitudes on the abuse of authority. In the end the survey showed that the American police force almost evenly divided on the issue of whether a police officer is more likely to arrest a person who displays what the officer considers to be a bad attitude.
