Although settled life seems to be the norm of modern civilization, there are a few ethnic groups that still follow the itinerant lifestyle weaved into their traditions. And while locals would welcome harmless nomads into their community, they would give more than just a hostile leer to menacing outsiders. Roma are one such unwelcomed ‘guests’ in Europe whose infamous crimes against their settled neighbors antagonized the entire continent against them. Even though there were many attempts to ameliorate the reputation of Roma, antiziganism remains intense and widespread to this day. To combat the Roma problem effectively, all parties concerned—the Hungarian government, the Roma community, and international organizations—must realize its status quo and collaborate to improve it. …show more content…
Roma are a social minority in Hungary as they are only 8% of the nation’s 10 million population. Because of their notoriety, extreme violence against Roma is commonplace throughout the continent, and this is no exception in Hungary. Although the Hungarian government claims itself to be the vanguard of Roma integration, Roma activists argue otherwise. For instance, Hungarian police investigations regarding Roma are inept and slow to the point that Roma activists suspect the nation’s unwillingness in the involvement. Through underhanded means such as treating Roma children as mentally impaired regardless of their actual cognitive development, Hungary has also segregated and given them sub-par education. Though there are areas that have overcome Roma discrimination, the problem is still widespread throughout the nation (A.L.B. 2013). For Hungary to truly remedy itself of the Roma ordeal, it must first change its reluctant attitude. Thus, Hungary must discard negative preconceptions against Roma and lend more helping hands to alleviate the situation of Roma
