His father was too old to be much of a competition in arm-wrestling that day. Brad’s eyes were open as he realized that his father’s strength was fading. His father’s time was running out. He understood standing there in the first gentle hug of his father the signs of his father old age. His father wanted his son to be strong, to protect the family, and carry the family’s responsibility. His father released his son from the embrace, proud that Brad had the strength to continue after he dies. In Big Fish, Will is tired of hearing his father’s lies in his tall tales. All he ever wanted was the truth. Edward, Will’s father, continued to tell his tales to hammer them into Will’s head. Will knew each line and hated it. Ironically, he continued on to be a writer, however for the media, a form of writing and telling the truth. He wrote and told stories that held truth, not the fantasies and lies that haunted his background. That was not enough for his father as he lay dying. He wanted more, to have the storytelling gift passed on. Laying on his deathbed, he pushed Will to tell the story of his death. Will listened and told a story filled with fantasies.
