Any soldier that has an issue with alcohol or drugs (prescription or non) can self-refer themselves to the Army Substance Abuse Program and will receive no repercussions for doing so. The Army or your command will not punish you for making a positive change after recognizing that you might have a problem. There is no problem with seeking help before the problem gets worse and gets you into trouble and jeopardizes or life, career or other people’s lives. If you refer yourself to the program, do not think that your career might be affected in a negative way. ASAP participation is mandatory if command referred and failure to attend mandatory counseling will be in violation of Article 86 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Soldiers who fail to respond to the rehabilitation process will be processed for administrative separation from the service. Also, anyone who successfully completes ASAP and has another drug or alcohol related incident within 12 months of completion of the program, will be processed for separation as an alcohol or drug abuse rehabilitation
