The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines arson as the willful or malicious burning of property (as a building) especially with criminal or fraudulent intent. Arson is committed for a variety of reason, from pleasure to profit. Arson investigators play a key role in determining if a fire is arson, and if so, how to go about uncovering evidence to help solve the case. Some key signs of arson are the use of accelerants and multiple points of origin. Arson dogs are especially helpful in arson investigations. They are able to detect very small amounts of accelerants that may have been used to start the fire. There have been many famous arsonists that have committed the crime of arson for a wide variety of reasons. The domestic terrorist group, Earth Liberation Front, used arson as a way to spread their message about environmental protection. Their arsons caused several million dollars in damage and led some to spend time in prison. The crime of arson is most often thought of as a property crime, but can lead to the loss of life when people are unable to escape the fire.
