Character Education with Art as a Focus Character education is generally defined as the teaching of children in a manner that will help them simultaneously develop in ways that are both academic and moral. Truly efficient, effective teachers are continuously implementing both academic concepts and things like manners, critical thinking, and the ability to work well with other people into their lesson plans on a daily basis. While teaching the educational, required material, teachers should also be continuously instilling moral values in their students and setting a positive example for them to be intrinsically motivated. According to theatlantic.com, after the infusing of character education in the classroom, teachers and administration have seen benefits such as higher academic performance overall, improved test scores, a reduction in the number of student absences each week, less violence and bullying and an overall decrease in general disciplinary issues. (Lahey) All of these benefits and improvements provide no better argument to support character education. These benefits are being seen by enormous amounts of teachers and administration all across the country. According to edweek.org, numerous studies have been conducted over the past several years in Kansas, Missouri, Alabama, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oregon, Georgia and Maryland to survey the effectiveness of character education being implemented in the general education classroom and they all saw extremely similar results. Similar to the benefits listed above, each of these schools saw a decrease in violence, increased attendance and participation, and an overall decrease in situations where disciplinary action was required. (Stedje) A truly effective teacher realizes that her responsibility is not only to teach academic subjects, but to teach her students to care about others, to be responsible for their actions, and to be honest. The article says that students are usually extremely open-minded about the idea, but all of the teachers and administration have to be willing to work and put forth the effort needed as well. This means that the teachers must "practice what they preach". Teachers, for example, must practice respect with other teachers and their administration as well as with their students. In order for character education to be successful in any classroom, the students need to see their teachers leading by example.
