Janet Fish created her luminous painting “Orange Lamp and Oranges” in the year of 1982. It is an oil on canvas painting. The painting consist of various fruits, mostly oranges, glassware, and a lamp sitting on a glass table in a kitchen. The objects gleam like they are haloed in sunlight. In the back of the painting you see a cabinet beside a window with a curtain. The first thing I noticed in this painting was the glass bottle sitting in the center of the table. My attention is drawn to the liquid in the bottom of the bottle because of the light from the lamp shining on it. The light makes the color of the liquid stand out. There are two different sources of light that she uses. The first one is natural lightning coming from outside through the window. The second source of light is that from the lamp, which is casting orange hues over the objects on the table. We can see that it is daytime in this painting because of the sunlight shining through the curtain onto the cabinet. Fish uses reoccuring shapes such as circles and ellipses in this painting. She even printed a circle pattern on the curtain. We are also left wondering what it looks like outside, behind the curtain. The use of value shifts helps define the objects. There is also different textures being used in this painting. She uses shiny and smooth to depict the glass and a soft texture for the curtain and lampshade. The plastic wrapper surrounding a piece of fruit is also smooth, but more translucent than that of glass. The use of color is very and they flow from each object to the next.
