Art Analysis: The Afghan Girl

Throughout this project, my main focus is exploring the different ways emotions are found in people’s eyes. I want to look at diverse ways in which I can portray specific emotions, using different media such as simple sketches, ink or charcoal. I feel eyes are the windows of an individual’s soul, and various feelings and emotions can be recognised through them, I also feel that each pair of eyes tells a different story, which can extend the scope and introduces a new element to the project. I have decided to draw the famous image of ‘The Afghan Girl’, as it was the starting point and in some way, an influence on the direction I decided to take work in. Guy Denning was another artist who I looked at, his work stood out for me due to the boldness of the charcoal and chalk, and the simple technique in which he presents his portraits. Frank Auerbach was another artist who uses charcoal as a media to make his work. Those in the images are difficult to see through all the marks and the darkness of the charcoal, however I like the fact that the mystery of the people in the portraits doesn’t affect the emotions which are being portrayed to us. The darkness of the portraits can present itself, as something different to each viewer, that’s what I think, is so special about the mystery in his work. Another artist that I’m going to have a look at is Picasso, the way in which he’s chosen to demonstration the eyes is very different to their usual placement.
