Create and Release Have you ever felt genuinely happy because you figured something out all by yourself? Without the help from others? That is the satisfaction that comes along with art therapy. It is a relatively new and evolving therapeutic process. Art therapy as well as the countless number of other types of therapeutic processes fall under the category of psychotherapies. Meeting one on one with a counselor and discussing problems in your everyday life is the most known process. That most certainly does not make it the most productive method for working through problems. The art that is created can provide great insight into the patient’s past (Reported by F. Brinley Bruton from London, February 5, 2015). Painting and drawing is considered un-Islamic by some extremists so many patients have never before drawn a picture or handled a brush. The therapist shows them ways to express their anger and their love of their country through the art that they create. The art classes provide a way for the patients to express their feelings and these classes are part of a de-radicalization program that has been helping former jihadis reintegrate into mainstream society (Reported by F. Martin Reichman, a psychiatrist in Centennial, Colorado. I went to go see Dr. Reichman and ask him some questions to find out more about this fascinating form of psychotherapy. I first asked if he had been apart or witnessed an art therapy session and how it was like. His Response was, “Well, the only time I've came across any type of art therapy session was when I was apart of a consoling practice and one of the therapists used art multiple times on patients. It usually would entail the patient being handed paper and a pencil or sometimes paint. Then the therapist would go through with them what they were struggling with and have them produce an image that described the situation’ (Dr. Reichman). After a few more questions on the practice and how it was effective I needed to ask The Dr. the most important question. I asked if he thought art therapy could be the most productive form of psychotherapy out there? He responded with, “It’s possible but I cant say, I haven't witnessed every form and only someone who information on the progression of someones sessions over time could make a conclusion like that.’ (Dr. Reichman, Martin.
