First Lady Artist of the Baroque Era
According to the Merriam Webster dictionary the definition of Baroque is: of or relating to a dramatic style of art and music that was common in the 17th and early 18th centuries and that featured many decorative parts and details; having many details or too many details. When you look at the artist and the art of the time you would see that her art is the true definition of Baroque. It wasn’t until later that a she would become recognized as an artist of the Baroque. She was one of the first women to be admitted into the Academie del Disegno (Academy of Design). Her art is very detailed and colorful. Who was this woman? Her name Artemisa Gentileschi. Let us explore this woman of the Barouqe times, who is now considered one of the greatest artist of her time. (Parker; Grace)

In her interpretation of the work, you see that she shows her Judith as strong, determined, and more mature. If you look at Caravaggio you will see his interpretation is that of a young pretty Judith, a little squeamish and stilted. The maid, Abra, in Caravaggio’s work is old and haggard, were Artemisia portrayed her as young. Let us take a look at another of Artemisia paintings that one of Susanna and the Elders, male artist normally painted Susanna as being flirtatious and coyly. Artemisia painted it from a female perspective, she made Susanna look vulnerable, frightened even a little repulsed. Could that have been because she was a very young woman, in a predominately man’s world? Could her work be reflecting the harassment she may have been enduring at the time that she began her training with Tassi? Was her rendition of Judith Slaying Holofernes a means of brandishing the humiliation she had gone through, or maybe it was symbolic justice for herself and possibly others. (Parker; Grace;
