“[T]he rise of the notion that history and literature should be taught not as disciplines but as therapies whose function is to raise minority self-esteem.” (Schlesinger 15). I coincide with this statement as I believe that history would not repeat itself when it is avoided and it gives us confidence that it will teach the next generation on how to deal with these things in the future. However, as Bruce A. Goebel says in “Diversity, Conformity, and Democracy: A Critique of Arthur M. Schlesinger’s The Disuniting of America: Reflections on a Multicultural Society” that “Schlesinger is concerned with the way various groups of ethnics, feminists, and others influence what is taught public school” and I think that Goebel is correct in this as Schlesinger wants to deliver his message to youth by learning history influenced by many groups in order to acknowledge diverse
