2. In what ways did the emerging industrial economy conflict with artisan republicanism? How did wage laborers respond to the new economy?
The emerging industrial economy was flourishing with mass production manufacturers whose goal was to keep wages low and production high. Most manufacturers worked their wageworkers long 12 hour work days which took away from their family life. This type of employment was in direct conflict with the artisan republicanism ideology of a small scale producer that viewed themselves as craftsmen in their field of expertise with republican ideals and dedication to the independent worker.
