I do not believe that her boss was being racist about not bringing in people who pronounced ‘ask’ as ‘ax’. It is common for African American’s to pronounce ‘ask’ as ‘ax’ due to pronouncing it as ‘ax’ in African. When coming to the United States, however, African American’s continued to carry this pronunciation with them, causing this to be a feature of African American English. While it is common for African Americans to pronounce it as ‘ax’, I have noticed people of other ethnicities using this term as well. From my point of view, I feel that a lot of people may slip every occasionally, in using ‘ax’, it isn’t just one specific culture that tends to use ‘ax’ instead of ‘ask’.
