The importance of leadership. Everyone in this world can be a leader. Being a leader does not mean you have to be famous, it simply means you have a passion for something and you put time and effort into that passion. There are many different types of leaders, some more influential than others. There can also be both positive and negative leaders. Someone may be a leader and not even know it yet. A positive leader should create a welcoming atmosphere, provide guidance, and encouragement to others. Leadership in higher education is critical. As a growing professional in student affairs, I want to be the best leader I can possibly be for students. The best way to determine leadership is to have others, who you surround yourself with on a daily basis assess you. After reading the Student Leadership Practices Inventory 360 results, one common trend was that myself score was a lot lower than my observers average score in all five categories. A question that I ask myself, why is that? I feel that myself score was lower because the amount of experience I have had in higher education. Although, I have come a long way throughout my internship, I know there is always room for improvement. The best leaders are the ones who are willing to take criticism and learn from how others view them. As I continue to assess my leadership, there are three specific areas I want to explore. One area that is in need for development is challenging the process, specifically in searching for innovative ways to improve what is being done.
