Within the role of assessor, it is imperative that the assessor understands the standards set by the awarding body. The effects of not knowing and understanding the standards are that the learner will not achieve the required standard and that they will be doing work not required to meet the set target. The assessor must also understand the standards in order to apply them successfully. If an assessor does not understand the standards then he or she will not be able to form the tasks required to meet the standards that the awarding body have set out.

All learners must be provided with a safe environment to work and an equal chance. All materials for the learner to pass the task/assessment must be provided and it must be judged to correspond with what the awarding body has set out. Asking any learner to do any unnecessary work that is not required by the awarding body would be pointless and also unfair. This means that you must make a judgment that the evidence provided matches that of the standards. Evidence must reach the target that the standards have set, to ask any more from the learner would not be fair or viable. Any evidence that does not relate to what the standards have set would not be deemed good enough to pass that certain part of the task. In order to make a fair judgment, you must be able to understand the standards and what they are asking the learner to do so to achieve the set standards.

Making an assessment decision must be done so with no personal view. Making a judgment must be done solely by what standards the awarding body has set. If the learner has met all the points that they must meet in the standards then it must be deemed a pass. To make a decision you must fairly compare their work with what is asked for them to do.
