If we use the Learning Cycle as a starting point and look at each aspect in turn, I will explain the role and responsibilities of a VLA specific to teaching:

Identify need

My role as VLA dictates that before any learning begins, I must first identify any learning needs that the learner may have. This will be achieved through several methods that include, but are not limited to Initial Assessments, Skills Scans, LLWR Form and Learning Style Analysis. I would also identify any needs as the learner progressed on programme, both during and after a visit. The importance of identifying any needs that the learner has is to ensure that they will get any support that they need and that, during the planning stage, these needs can be taken into consideration. This will lead to a more bespoke learning experience for the learner and help overcome any barriers to learning.
By identifying the needs of the learner, the VLA is also promoting equality and diversity. If a person has learning difficulties, then these can be taken into consideration during the planning stage. Equally, if a learner is from an ethnic background and English is not their first language, this will be identified and steps can be taken to help the learner overcome this obstacle to leaning.

Plan & Design

As a VLA it is part of my role to plan lessons, book visits in advance, inform the learner of expectations and make sure that all materials that are needed are available. The tools that a VLA will use to help in planning include ESW Planning Sheets, Individual Learning Plans, Formal Review Forms and E-track. The VLA is responsible for keeping all plans up to date and for making any changes that maybe necessary.

Deliver

Once the planning is complete, the VLA would then deliver the lesson, creating and facilitating any opportunities for learning. They would also check progress against the last lesson, to ensure all preparation is complete. It is a key responsibility for a VLA to keep up to date, both in teaching and also in their field of expertise and also to maintain high standards in the delivery of all teaching.
Another key aspect of delivery is the health and safety of the learner. To this end, it is the VLA’s responsibility to ensure that the site where the lesson will be delivered is both safe and suitable and provides a supportive environment. If it does not meet this criteria the VLA should find a more suitable location or postpone the visit until one becomes available.

Assess

Once a learner has completed any work it is part of the VLA’s role to check that the work meets the criteria and standards as set out by the awarding body. The VLA would also identify knowledge gaps that the learner may have and use this to inform any further planning. Again, it is the VLA’s responsibility to keep up to date with the standards, maintain a high standard at all times and to comply with the rules of the organisation and any legislative codes of conduct e.g. Appeals and Complaints procedure.
