The males will communicate with the females either by emitting a soft and trilled mating call, or by waving their forefeet. When a female crosses the male’s path, the male will climb on her back and the female will further find a shallow place in a stream. She lays a long strand of eggs (approximately from about 202 to 623 eggs) and the eggs are attached to a rock or a pebble and sheltered from the sun. Embryonic development takes seven to eleven days. The tadpoles are white or sandy in color when they hatch and the coloration is similar to match the sand of the stream. They will stay as tadpoles for roughly four to eight months before they develop into frogs. The tadpoles with their ventral sucker’s remains attached to the rocks in the streams. The juvenile frogs leave as soon as there is significant rainfall. When they emerge on land they become a stunning green with black markings and then switch into the well known golden color. The nerve toxin that they produce is called “Zetekitoxoin” after their scientific name. The toxins are split into Zetekitoxin A and Zetekitoxin c. This is currently known amphibian with saxitoxin-analog activity. There is a hypothesis that the colorcehange in juveniles are a simultaneous action with the animals obtaining their skin toxicity.
