The Atlantic Canadian fish cake is not something one would think of as a delicacy or even a rare treat. In comparison to fish cakes prepared elsewhere, which are often heavily battered and well-presented, the fish cake of this region is almost crude in comparison. The key ingredients are a rough mash of salt cod, potato and onion, pan fried lightly and topped with butter and ketchup or green tomato relish. In some areas a side of baked beans is popular. The fish cake as we enjoy it here is something that symbolizes my identity as an Atlantic Canadian and moreover a Cape Bretoner. The fish cake is a food that was served in this region for many years. Its origins likely predate the commercial fisheries and the food was likely born out of necessity
