The reason for slave was people need cheap labor and African slaves were the answer. Natives slaves during this time were starting to die off and Europeans in both America and Europe need something else. They needed Africans. The Atlantic slave trade soon rose up and became a massive enterprise. Through the 1500 and 1600 almost 300,000 African slaves were brought to America. Through the next century that number rose to 1.3 million slaves. Slavery then spreads all throughout America. Europeans started colonizing more part in America and their demand for slaves grew. Slaves being transported to America went through the triangular trade and even more specific through the middle passage. All slaves were captured, sent to the West Indies and soon to arrive at either North or South America. In Africa many tribes lost their fittest members, their youngest and their most talented. The families of Africans were separated and some were never able to reunite with their families. The slaves were also effected on the ride overseas as well and an estimated of 13% of slaves died as they were being shipped over. Africans also contributed greatly to the economy and culture of America though. Their work was the biggest contribute. Without it many colonies would have never survived and grow. They also brought their expertise in agriculture and brought their culture like art, music, and religion. The population grew with Africans present. There were as many as two million Africans in the United States. This cause a large mixed race along with it. The worst effect overall is racism. Racism is “ The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races” (“Oxford Living Dictionaries” 1). Before slavery ended racism never had existed. Darker complexed people were as equal as someone white. But after slavery all that ended and African were treated with a lot less respect.
