Charlotte Holmes has had a troubled past involving multiple issues such as drug and alcohol abuse. Jamie Watson believes that this is why she was sent to boarding school in the first place. After Watson does an investigation of his own, he quickly learns that there is another major reason that Holmes was sent away. While reading one of his dad’s files, Watson discovers that Holmes’ live-in math tutor, August Moriarty, was arrested for providing Holmes with drugs. After the conviction, Moriarty is expelled from Oxford and is on horrible terms with his family. Watson is quickly able to conclude that Moriarty is a prime suspect. It is definitely possible that Moriarty would be motivated to murder by one dominant event in his past. The characterization of the Moriarty family is also a convincing aspect that forces the reader to think thoroughly about all of the potential suspects. Overall, a murder mystery is defined by all of the different possible suspects and ways in which the author is able to characterize them according to the circumstances.
