Based on the descriptions on the description of the Roman architect, Vitruvius, Mau labeled the various wall painting styles that were present within the the houses in Pompeii ; there were a total of four styles that were categorized : Incrustation Style (first style), Architectural Style (second style) , Ornate Style (third style) , and Intricate Style (fourth style). Within the House of M. Epidius Primus, the first , second and fourth style are found in the walls. By having three rooms in the fourth style, the fourth style is the most used style, where it is on room three , five and and nine . There are two different kinds of colors on the wall that survive. The first color can be see on the fauces, that is on the left side of the window. One has a tan color as its bottom layer with a gray shading that is unevenly spread out as the top layer; on the far right corner and bottom, the wall is a very dark grey. The second wall color is on the bottom left corner of the picture. Half of the wall section is a dark wine color , while the other section has a lavender hue to it. Other than a two color schemes within the two fauces, the wall is plainly decorated; because of its plain decoration, the wall causes no special attention to a particular gender ; the gender neutrality is conveyed through the gray that is on both colors .
