Picture being born into a life where the odds are stacked against you. Generational poverty is a complex issue that has hurt societies for centuries. It is a cycle that is passed down from generation to generation, keeping families from any opportunity. This poverty is not just about financial hardship, but it also includes limitations on education, healthcare, and other basic needs. I researched many reliable sources covering topics such as the history of generational poverty, the modern day issues it poses and also solutions to get out of generational poverty. I tied all of these sources together with the book “Fences” by August Wilson. This is how Troy’s whole life has been. He was born into a big family that was poor. His father was abusive and Troy was out of his childhood home at just fourteen. Considering all that Troy has been through, he is doing okay for himself and it is good on his part to try rid the generational poverty in his family. Generational poverty continues in modern society, presenting a difficult challenge stamped by established economic disparities, limited access to resources, and systemic barriers that slow progress for vulnerable populations. To research the issue of generational poverty in today's world, I started with an article from the source Britannica. This article defined poverty, describing it as “the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions”.
