In the play “Fences” by August Wilson, the theme of father and son relationship is well played through his story by creating drama, conflict and even resemblance of growth between both characters. The Father in this case named Troy Maxson has two sons named Lyons and Cory. Troy seems to be very hostile when it comes to is family but most importantly his sons, and it’s because of his past of dealing with racism interfering with his growth. I’ve notice that there’s a father to son cycle when it comes to the theme in “Fences”, for example when Troy is outside with Bono and Lyons in act one scene four. This song is a symbol that helps create the theme of the father and son relationship. This play is somewhat revolved around this song and on this case it telling the story of troy. When Troy sings it and says” You know Blue was mighty true, You know Blue as a good old dog, Blue trees a possum in a hollow log, You know from that he was a good old dog”, he seem to be referring himself as a good man, and seems to not regret his being of “a good man”. At the end of the play, we have Cory singing with Raynell the “Old Blue” song. In the process, Cory gets choked up singing it because it gives the idea that gets recognized that was the cycle his father had cared for him, and Troy had carried to Cory. In conclusion, the father and son cycle theme was known to be unstable and abusive, as we come to see in the fighting sense with Troy and Cory. When Cory gets kicked out and has to leave like this father left at the age of fourteen. “Blue laid down and died like a man, Now he’s treeing possums in the promise land, I’m gonna tell you this to let you know, Blue’s gone where the good dogs go”.
