Lord of the Flies by William Golding tells the story of a group of British schoolboys who survive a plane crash only to find themselves the only inhabitants of a deserted island. They are forced to hunt for food, create shelter, and develop their own makeshift system of government to survive.
The book may have had underdeveloped characters, but it did have a thick plot that exposed the problems with human nature, given a situation where there is no figure of authority. The boys on the island are not prepared to give up the ways from their homes, and the first thing they try to do is establish civilization in the form of a simplistic democracy.
