Two years ago, I was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome (high-functioning autism). This syndrome has affected me personally, in specific my communication and social skills. The time, my family and I found out about the diagnosis, it was difficult for us to accept, but eventually we did, by being informed about the diagnosis. As time went by, I started to volunteer in an Autism Awareness organization called Team Mario. This organization helps people who are on the Autism Spectrum feel like they are part of a group and at the same time participate in activities that any children and adult are able to do at their age. During my time volunteering with Team Mario I have met wonderful people who are under the Autism Spectrum. I met, Damien Duque, who is an ambient musician, his main focus in his music is for people who have a sort of mental illness and are in the Autism Spectrum to cope with the sounds he creates in his music. His music contains sounds that we hear every day for example, birds chirping and wind sounds it is mostly about the beauty of nature. The problem I had mostly was starting it because I wanted my audience to be focused on people who have no idea what is like to have either a mental illness and are not part of the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) I started it by saying, “Each individual is unique” then slowly, started to continue writing the poem until the final result. Once, I finished writing it I showed it to my therapist and friend about it and she said, “I like it”, the days where getting closer to perform she was helping me to calm down before the day came and practice reading the poem out
