In the above case, the parents of a child with Autism felt the Alamo Heights ISD failed to provide appropriate services in a timely manner. This situation could have been avoided if a member of the child’s ARD meeting team: The Administrator/Designee, Parent, Special Education Teacher, General Education Teacher, Counselor, LSSP/School Psychologist, Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Behavior Support Therapist, Assistive Technology Consultant, or Parent Liaison could have sat down one on one and discussed the IEP, assessments, and progress with the parent in language that could be clearly understood.

If this were my practice or class, I feel communication and making sure the parent is “heard” is very important. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both common terms for a group of complicated disorders within brain development. These disorders are seen in variable degrees, by problems with social situations, and verbal and nonverbal expression and duplicated behaviors. Not only is it stressful for the school system it is equally stressful for the parents.
