The Autism Spectrum Disorders or ASD, also called pervasive developmental disorders, are a set of problems related to the development of the nervous system and affect the way in which the patient communicates and relates to other people.
Usually, these disorders result in significant limitations on the personal independence of those affected and are a major cause of stress, anxiety, and discomfort in families with afflicted members.
Generally, children who have an ASD do not develop social skills and language in the same way as the other kids of the same age group. As a result, they find it difficult to relate to other people. Children with an ASD may also show unusual behaviors and learning problems.

The first signs that your child has difficulties in communication can be detected in the following ways:
a. If he says some meaningless words.
b. Does not respond to his name.
c. He has not learnt any word within 18 months of age.
d. The child is not able to understand jokes or sarcasm.
e. He finds it difficult to read body language and facial expressions.
Older children may show an unusual use of language, and find it difficult to start conversations or continue them. Children with severe autism may not speak at all, but you can help them communicate in other ways, such as through signs or by using drawings.

Children with ASD have difficulty relating to other people, making friendships or even contacting with other children. They may find it difficult to cope with new situations. If your child has an ASD he might show the following behaviors:

Therapies such as ACA (Applied Behavior Analysis) can help improve the social and communication skills of your child. This means that your child is visited by a clinical psychologist or an expert therapist who uses a technique that entails an appropriate and beneficial behavior.

Sometimes, the doctor may prescribe your child medicines to reduce some short-term symptoms such as agitation, aggressive behavior or hyperactive behavior. However, these drugs can have side effects.
