According to the DSM-5, the following are the criteria for a diagnosis of autism:

Persistent difficulties in the social use of verbal and nonverbal communication as manifested.
The deficits result in functional limitations in effective communication, social participation, social relationships, academic achievement, or occupational performance, individually or in combination.
The onset of the symptoms is in the early developmental period (but deficits may not become fully manifest until social communication demands exceed limited capacities).
The symptoms are not attributable to another medical or neurological condition or to low abilities in the domains or word structure and grammar, and are not better explained by autism spectrum disorder,

Autism is not a mental “impairment”, it is a social impairment. This means that autism gives “smartness” to individuals with autism, but they can sometimes be awkward, or not be able to talk at all. As a matter of fact, autism and the autism spectrum should not be called an ”impairment”, it should be called a gift.
If I had autism, would that mean that I am “mentally retarded, or intellectually impaired”? (From The Autism Answerbook) Research shows, no. As it has just been stated, autism is a social thing. Not mental.
