AutismXpress: Reveal Your Emotions Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological disorder that has an effect on normal brain function, affecting development of the person's communication and social interaction skills. (“All about Autism”, n.d). People who have these disorders have difficulty with nonverbal communication and activities that include social and physical interaction. These people find it hard to express their thoughts, feelings or ideas because in most cases they do not know the exact words to use or do not how to pronounce the words clearly for others to understand. Knowing this, the app AutismXpress is a screen based media designed for children with autism in order to understand the different types of feelings and emotions people (including themselves) feel. It was the first autism android application produced by Studio Emotion and it is appropriate for children from four year of age to twelve years old. According to AutismXpress, this app is “a fun interactive smart phone and touch tablet app for children who are having trouble recognizing and understanding facial expressions and identifying the emotional states of others and respond accordingly” (n.d). The main aim is of making this app is to help children with autism understand others and particularly themselves in understanding feelings, thoughts, intentions and responses. AutismXpress aims at influencing good behavior and social awareness (AutismXpress, n.d). In Mazurek and Wenstrp’s study of ASD children and their relationship between social media and also television, children with ASD used electronic media as an avenue for social interaction. (2013). The app would be more effective if AutismXpress could be upgraded for children from 12-15 years of age but still keeping the present one. In this upgraded app, it would be more effective to have a social interaction where other children with ASD can associate socially, making it more of a social interaction. Although it may be questionable that online social interaction actually makes one more lonely, in Lidstrom and Hemmingsson’s article, they explain that, “children with disabilities are frequent users of the internet as a social media indicates a child can be alone physically, but by using a computer and the internet still have a sense of having friendship or a relationship.
