Ava Kay Iplier (née Max; February 16, 1910) was born in Los Angeles, California. She grew up in a household that is well-known in the entertainment industry. She is the oldest child of Isaiah Max and Thalia Martinez. Ava has a younger sister named Aaliyah. Her father is a photographer, and her mother is a former actress.
When Ava was eight, her parents divorced in 1918. Thalia gained custody of her and Aaliyah and had them live with her in Pasadena. Throughout her childhood and teenage years, Ava competed in numerous beauty pageants, and she attended Pasadena High School for a year before pursuing a career as a model and socialite at 17 years old.
