Throughout people's lives, multiple truths get twisted. As truths pass from person to person, they slowly become more and more altered and disoriented. In Avi's Nothing But The Truth, they illustrate this idea of "the truth becoming twisted". Throughout the novel, the events in the story represent a truth that turns disoriented. Philip Malloy, a freshman at Harrison High School, goes through a series of events that eventually lead his truth to become altered. Throughout the novel, Philip's motivation stays consistent in wanting to get on the track team, likewise, Miss Narwin's motivation to teach her students English Literature also stays consistent. I’m going to get transferred out of both” (33). Philip’s decision to attempt to get out of Narwin’s class is based on his motivation. Instead of trying to raise his grade in any way, he chooses to attempt to get out of her class. However, towards the end of the novel, Philip decides to finally ask for extra work but he is too late since the school had switched his class after the negative attention they got from suspending Philip for disobeying school policy. Philip entered Miss Narwin’s classroom, confused, and Miss Narwin asked Philip why he was there. Philip states, “To get my grades up, I was going to ask for extra work. Philip, you are no longer in my class. Didn’t you hear me? So I could get on the track team and.”(159). Despite the trouble Philip has caused, he finally decides to ask for extra help to boost his English grade however he is too late due to the school switching his English teacher. Philip’s motivation throughout the story is to get on the track team, however, in the middle of the story, his motivation makes him try to get out of Miss Narwin’s class. Miss Narwin's motivation to teach her students English Literature, however, her motivation is impacted by Philip's
