One of the most important facets of life that religion explained to the Nords was how humanity came to be. In Norse mythology, this explanation was given to them through the actions of the gods Odin, Vile and Ve. The Nordic creation story expresses that the first humans, Ask and Embla, were created by Odin, Vile and Ve. They created the humans by using the trunks of the Ask and Elm trees in which Odin gave it life, Vile gave it thoughts and feelings and Ve gave it sight and hearing. It is from these two humans that the rest of humanity was created. On the whole, religion played a vital role in the Nords as it elucidated how they came to be.

Their religion outlines that there are four paradises after death which was determined by the way one died. For instance, if a person died of childbirth then they would be taken western underworld. The closest concept to hell was for people that died of natural causes such as a heart attack. They went to the northern underworld to serve the king of the underworld.
