In today’s paper, Babe Ruth, also known as “The Bambino” or “The Sultan of Swat”, an American hero, will be quickly reviewed over. Babe Ruth was born in Baltimore, Maryland on February 6, 1895. At age seven, Ruth was sent to St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys and learned many of the important baseball skills he would use later in his life. How Ruth came to play baseball there is uncertain. According to one account, his placement at St. Mary's was due in part to repeatedly breaking windows with long hits while playing street ball. Another said that he was told to join a team by the school's athletic director to become a catcher. Ruth would play in a minor-league baseball for the Baltimore Orioles in 1914 but was quickly sold to the Red Sox.
