Upon the latest decision from the Balinese government, two Australians have payed the ultimate price for their actions. This was done in response to the actions of a large group of Australian citizens who were charged for illegally importing drugs and as a result the two ringleaders were sentenced to death on the 29th of April 2015. The major issues surrounding these deaths are the factors regarding the rehabilitation and the recovery that took place in prison and also the message that would be sent to the public if they were to be given a reduced sentence that would ultimately lead to them being given death or life as a sentence
President Widodo
During the ongoing disputes between Australia and Indonesia there were quite a number of points raised that affected the overall decision that would eventually cost Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran their lives. One of these factors was the cracking down on drug laws across Indonesia which played a vital role in the final decision that was made by Joko Widodo, the Indonesian president at the time. His reasoning behind the final decision was that if he let these people off with a lesser sentence it would encourage a tidal wave of drug traffickers to attempt the journey into Indonesia and sell illegal substances to the population. Regarding guidance it would have been advisable for Joko to have sought after the guidance of spiritual leaders and to have referred to the spiritual text of his choice. It would only have been then that he would have had a clear understanding of who his actions would have affected and the overall demise to his decision. Due to the sensitive nature of the topic it would be in the best interest for president Widodo to reduce the sentence of these two Australian men but on the flip side it would also be understandable if he were to go on with the execution to send out a strong message
