The author of this document seems to say that although men and women vary greatly in their characteristics and roles in this society, they should, at least in certain aspects of life, be treated on equal grounds. Ban Zhao appears to have written this text for the women of her time period and the later generations of women to come, as she says she “grieve(s) that you, my daughters, just now at the age for marriage, have not. . . learned the proper customs for married women” (Document 1).
