Born on June 8, 1925, in New York, New York, her family was a happy one. Barbara was born to a family of four. She had two older siblings: Martha Pierce, her older sister; and James Pierce, her older brother. Five years later, her brother Scott Pierce was born, the last of the Pierce children. Her father, Marvin Pierce, was later announced President of McCall Corporation. Her mother, Pauline Robinson Pierce, sent her to a boarding school in South Carolina soon after. Her son was diagnosed with dyslexia, and it opened Barbara’s eyes to the needs of other people. She began to appear on talk shows, telling people about the problems of literacy and illiteracy. It was one of her greatest causes and was completely devoted to it. The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy was born. Because of this, the former First Lady Jeannie Baliles began the Virginia Literacy Foundation, which helped effect the problem of literacy. Barbara also worked with the White House Historical Association and the White House Preservation Fund. She raised at least $25 million dollars for her project. “Barbara Bush became the first U.S. First Lady to become a recipient of the Henry G. Freeman Jr. Pin Money Fund, receiving $36,000, most of which she gave to favorite charities.”
