In the narrative entitled “Nothing to Envy” by Barbara Demick, she tells us of the terrible dictatorship of North Korea. First, Demick mentions the rubber shoe commercial Chang-Bo is watching. He makes the comment about how if there are so many boots then why did his never children not have any. The author writes about how Chang-Bo is interrogated for three days and was possibly beaten and mistreated. In addition, she points out that Chang-Bo cannot trust his wife because she is loyal to the government. For example, Mrs. Song had at one point felt no pity for a woman who was punished for making a joke about Kim Jong-il’s height. Moreover, she emphasizes that Chang-Bo knew that all the stories of triumph told to the North Koreans were lies.
