Sartoris’s father, Abner, is a stiff, stern, upright despicable man. It is noted that his poor moral fiber has been a lifelong characteristic. He stole horses from fellow Southerners during the Civil War, he has been accused of starting multiple property fires, and purposely destroys other people’s property. Abner sees Sarty’s nervousness and hesitation to defend him as dishonor to his blood line. Abner makes it clear to Sartoris that if he doesn’t stick up for his family, his family will not stick up for
