Vietnam War Veteran
At the age of 18 in 1968, Barry Fox was enlisted for 3 years into the army. As Barry was too young, he was sent to Canungra, Queensland to undergo a jungle training camp for 3 weeks. Once he arrived on the battle grounds, Barry was immediately transferred to the engineer unit where his job required him to examine mines and deploy them throughout the jungle. Barry’s profession also included being driver, where only a specific were able to operate those military vehicles.
Throughout the 3 years Barry Fox had been enlisted, there have been many experiences which he has encountered, whether they were positive or negative. There are many positive experiences which has benefited his career today. Barry Fox is heavily involved with his church, he also thanks his faith for allowing him to come to terms with the experiences in Vietnam. Barry is a counsellor at a prison where his experiences of war allows him to understand the inmates.

Barry Fox insists on the idea of war dehumanises you and changes your life completely. Being called “baby killers” by people of your nation is heart breaking, “You become cold” stated Barry. An example of dehumanisation occurred when Barry and his fellow comrades destroyed an old man’s rice farm instantly. Everything he had worked for, gone in a matter of seconds. Barry and his team felt no sympathy towards him, they were only fulfilling their job. Barry had sworn at the old man, whilst tears were running down his face and his world was turned upside down.
