From the fourteen through the late eighteen century, instruments like the harpsichord and clavichord were the forefront keyboard instruments but the creation of the modern piano (or to be more exact the pianoforte) completely shifted the popularity of its predecessors. This is partly due to the fact that great composers such as “Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven wrote many compositions for the fortepiano” (an earlier model of the modern piano) that propelled the piano’s popularity among music and great declined the popularity of its predecessor, mostly notable the harpsichord. The history of the piano is deeply rooted in the 1700’s (around 1968), when Bartolomeo Cristofori started creating an instrument that he envisioned would be a "arcicembal che fa il piano e il forte" which when translated means "harpsichord that plays both softly and loudly"(. The purpose of the piano as stated by its created was to create an instrument that could have a more dynamic range and tone that it currently existing predecessor of the previous eras ("Re-Opening of the Piano War" 1).

However, the piano created by Cristofori is much different the modern piano because when the pianoforte was invented, it was made out of a wooden frame instead of a steel frame. Therefore, the weight of the felt hammers were much lighters causing the pianoforte to have less sustain. It was during the 1860’s the American Steinway piano was first considered to incumbent all that we considered to be the modern piano, with it stronger sustain, and louder, and richer
