Response to “Batting Clean-up and Striking Out” In Dave Barry’s “Batting Clean-up and Striking Out” from Dave Barry’s Greatest Hits, Barry compares and contrasts how women and men react to different situations. Barry’s largest comparison is the woman’s “ability to see extremely small quantities of dirt”(Barry 248). This is of course a humorous approach to the fact that women pay more attention to minute details than men. However, this is a generalization of the stereotype that women are more caring than men. Barry is a comedy writer, so to expect politically sensitive writing is not very sensible. To call Barry’s writing sexist would be unnecessary, especially in the sense that the portrayal of the women in the text is in no way negative,
