The Battle of the Coral Sea, in May (1942) between Japan, and the allied forces of America and Australia was a vast turning point in the War in the Pacific, because the US aircraft carriers and Australian cruisers and destroyers engaged the Japanese in the battle and forced the Japanese to abandon their plans, this was the first time The Japanese were halted when going through the pacific. The Japanese attack on Port Moresby in New Guinea because New Guinea could then be used as a platform to attack Fiji, New Caledonia and Samoa. This would also cut off communication between Australia and United States.

It is significant to appreciate that Japan's high command was determined to capture Port Moresby And isolate Australia, This was a top planned priority.
