Why bearded dragons aren’t ideal starter pets Bearded dragons, with their charming demeanor and unique appearance, often captivate the interest of potential first-time pet owners. Bearded dragons are just as difficult to care for as any other reptile. Proper care for these animals may come with troubling tasks. However, despite their popularity, they may not be the best choice for beginners. While these reptiles have their appeal, several factors make them less suitable as starter pets. For instance, if they don’t get enough calcium in their diet they get metabolic bone disease or if their tank isn’t cleaned enough they can develop respiratory infections. Another issue that can appear is lack of space. The minimum tank size requirement is 40 gallons, which is typically 36” x 18” x 18” which is double the size of other reptile tanks. Even with all that space, some people may argue that if you keep your bearded dragon in it’s tank full time you should get a bigger enclosure. Bearded dragons need specialized environments to thrive. This includes other stuff needed to house this animal such as proper heating, lighting, substrate, hiding spots, and climbing structures. Speaking of getting materials for an enclosure, this cost can add up which leads to my next problem, cost. For a young bearded dragon, you can expect to pay $50+ and even more for a full grown. Now that doesn’t sound too bad, but, that’s just where it starts. If you would like a morph where they can have more vibrant colors, you can pay hundreds or even an upward of thousand dollars.
