For this week’s Reader’s workshop our read aloud was Beauty and the Beast (with illustrations by David Chestnutt), first written by the French author Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve.
The bulk of their post-reading discussion revolved around the characters. They discussed how at first it seemed that Beast was an evil character and that he was judged as such because of his appearance and his irritability. Beauty, because she was such a kind person, saw that “his heart was good inside”, and helped break the enchantment that presented him from being his true self.
