Becker Muscular Dystrophy is an inherited genetic disorder, linked to a recessive X-gene. It involves progressive muscle weakness and eventual degeneration. The disorder is caused by a mutated or flawed gene, known as dystrophin, which keeps muscle cells intact. But the genes are shortened, fragile and only partially functional. The mutated genes affect the proper amount of protein that is needed to keep muscles strong and growing. The muscles eventually begin to deteoriate as time progresses, and the body starts to degenerate, this is Becker Muscular Dystrophy. The disorder was first discovered during the 1860s, by a neurologist Dr. Duchenne, and it is named after a German doctor, Peter Becker in the 1950s.
