Bed Control Meeting Reflection

On the first day of Leadership clinicals, which was February 2, 2017, I was supposed to shadow Chris Conway. Due to Chris being out of work sick, I shadowed Sandy Porter on the 5East Medical-Surgical floor. “Nurse managers have a critical role in managing the delivery of safe, high-quality, efficient nursing care” (Painter, 2015). During the first day, I followed Mrs. Porter as she checked charts, assisted the LPNs with their IV pushes, and made sure the floor ran in order. She also assisted me with using the software that Jackson Hospital uses for their electronic charting. I learned how to look up information on different procedures and policy protocols for the hospital.
On my second day, February 9, 2017, Chris Conway was back at the hospital and I could shadow him for the first time. To begin the day off, the hospital has a “Bed Control Meeting” at 0900 every day. During this meeting, there is someone from each floor and area

After thirty minutes of waiting, Chris received a call that the interviewee was a no show. Chris and I then went to the South building for a phone conference regarding the computer software that the hospital uses. There were a few people missing from the meeting that were needed to complete the task, so everyone decided to reconvene until the following Thursday. The hospital had a “mock” Code that they do at least once a month. I was allowed to stand in and watch and listen. They called “Code 99 Drill” over the intercom, had a pharmacist, ICE team, respiratory, and floor nurses all in the room. Jennifer, who oversaw the drill, was calling out vital signs and asking what should be done next. Everyone did a wonderful job. Once the drill was over, Chris walked me back to the office so I could gather my items. I told him that I would see him again soon when I had my license and was working at Jackson
