The message is that a specific type group of students are a certain way and should be treated a certain way. People failed to realize that anything that may happen in urban schools or schools with metal detectives may occur in suburban or rural schools. Using metal detectors and police officers to manage safety in schools creates an environment that is not trusted, unsafe for students who are approach by excessive force and treat students in a way that is similar to the way criminals are treated. In the article Criminalizing the Classroom, a student’s name Aisha, who left class 10 minutes late was seen in the halls with her friend and stopped by the assistant principal. The assistant principal asked them to go into the detention room, but Aisha was trying to communicate that she was on her way to lunch. The police officer intervened and he, “jerked Aisha’s left arm behind her back at a painful angle, a jolt which also caused her right hand to slam against the wall. Aisha cried out in pain” ( Mukherjee & Fellow, 2007). The force that the officer used was not appropriate because Aisha was going to lunch peacefully. Using excessive force takes away safety for the students. In reality, Aisha was not causing any harm to any students or staff, but harm was done to her. Incorporating metal detectors and having police officers monitor the school prompts the questions about who the school is protecting from
