Life throws up various aspects of belonging such in the movie “Bend it like Beckham” by Gurinder Chadha, exemplifies how sometimes you have to rebel against the things you have been taught to be morally correct by the society in order to belong. The protagonist Jassminder also known as Jess, has an Indian cultural background, where females are restricted to play football, notwithstanding Jess loves and has passion for it. For example in the scene where the protagonist practices skills using cabbage, the director has made well use of the technique of props to effectively illustrate Jess’s struggle of belonging. In the scene the protagonist uses a cabbage as a football and practices knee dribbling behind her mum who is cooking Indian food and getting irritated by Jess for not being able to cook traditional Indian …show more content…
Moreover, in some other scene where Jess’s football team members helps her to redress in Saree the director has used costume technique in an impressive way to convey the clash of synchronization. On Jess’s sister’s wedding day, after she participates and wins the football match finals, her fellow team members helps her redress into the traditional Saree from modern sports uniform to rush back to her sister’s wedding. In this scene the director highlights the major clash between the two cultures, where Jess’s traditional Saree and fellow team members’ modern looking football uniform identifies antagonism. The traditional saree represents how she is struggling to accomplish her dream of playing football as a professional in reality by trying to balance the two most important diverse affair in her life, her family and desire to play football. The director has made intellectual use of props and costumes in this movie to help the audience empathize the many battle Jess had been faced
