Currently, nurse practitioners are limited to assessing, diagnosing and providing support for the treatment of addiction. Some medications can be prescribed by NPs. However, nurse practitioners are prohibited to prescribe specific, yet effective medications for medication assisted treatment (MAT). Interprofessional collaboration is essential to the promotion of access to care for patients with addiction.
